You have to go down to go UP

Mon Jun 23, 2008, 8:10 AM
Recently read a journal of Wen-m, a person i admire a lot. He said he had a mental block, so i said to him this from books i have read.

Past year i had a mental block, this is common, but i couldnt realize what was it, after reading and reading, yeah i luv to read alot, finally understood.

The book from Sarah Simblet, sketchbook for the artist, teach me what i was doing wrong.

Where can you find the book you ask me? SORRY BUT, i promised an old dying lady that i wont be the GOOGLE of no one. Just type the name lazy people.

Its rutine, rutine kills creativity, if you stay in your safe zone, thats what i call it, you wont learn a thing. When you are drawing and you are feeling you are solving a weird math probrlem, then you are learning if you dont then you are still in your safe zone.

Safe zone its when you know a certain face, pose, line weight, thecnique, that you already dominate. After repeating and repeating this, your brain gets tired, and doesnt find any challenge at all.

Thats why people go to see movies and anime, and said woooooooww, that shoot was cool i will try that, and they are getting out of their safe zone to try something new. They are breaking their rutine process to try something new.

So if you had a 100% of drawing skill in your safe zone, each time you go out and try farther things, your drawing skill will drop off dramatically, to a 5%. People will notice this and will start getting mad at you(im not saying they arent right), this is a cool sign that shows you that you are in the correct direction.

"If dogs are barking we are in the right direction", Quijote.

Some people go back to the safe zone, just to keep people happy. Dont ever do that, evolve, try new things, with time you can try new things that they wont show inmediatly result but at the end you will get a better product. I have seen a lot of people that are afraid to get out from their safe zone. Most of them because they have a family and bills to pay, so its even harder for them, when hobby becomes work its harder to try new things, so if you are young, get out of your safe zone.

Picasso said that he has seen many artists cooking the same cake over and over again, soon you will get tired of the same flavor, cooking just one cake, wont make you a better chef, even if the cake taste like glory.

You can have a style for works, and a free style for your own, free will.

Since i stopped doing just pencils, colors was a new world for me, which im enjoying each day, some results not end pretty well some of them end nice, but each time i use different brushes different colors, different shots, trying not to do the same thing twice. Always reading(need to finish two books that are in line), practicing and studying. The learning curve never ends, its stupid that some people asume you arent learning, but you need to study each day.

Also need to understand that art its a subjective matter, the only important person you need to satisfy its yourself, if you like what you are doing and put your heart in it, people will notice it too. If they dont, well like i said its subjective, there are no objective things for this.

So dont worry if drawing skills go down when trying new things, with time they will go higher.

So people get out of your safe zone and try new things.

Well said. This was just the journal entry I needed to read to affirm my decision. I'm planning on going in a completely different direction in my art and future plans, and your entry has inspired me to focus on going forward, never mind what others may think of my decision.

"Now.. Is that anything like the creature you saw last night?"

I haven't got that particular book, BUT anatomy by Sarah Simblet is AMAZING!! It's so helpful and not hard to read at all. It gives you mini exercises and lots of pictures to help you get a grip on anatomy. She's so great....

Also the tracing paper effect in the book sold me on it! XD

Thanks for the info though!

i had tried that and works well, you wont find the changes inmediatly, just look the colors i used to make almost a year now, its slow, but if you feel you are learning you will learn.
