Art is a DIY thing

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 17, 2009, 9:11 AM
For those who arent familiar with the meaning of DIY, it means do it yourself. You dont need other people to do your homework.

THERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS FOR THIS OR SECRET ROADS THAT MAKE YOU GET THERE FASTER.

I receive a lot of notes of people telling me to be their teacher i apreciate it its an honor, but here comes the answer you wont like to hear, the harsh answer many other people in deviant art dont ever reply, the answer that makes people to END alone with no friends, the real answer that will help you improve and that is:

I CANT be your teacher, i just cant do your home work, or be your google, to help you get things, also i cant be your manual in any software, art its NOT for lazy artist, there are no shorcuts or magical items that makes you work better than others. Its all about DIY thing and hard work, hours of hard work im a living proof about this.

Let me explain, to be a teacher, you need great skills, you need wisdom, thing i lack a lot, patience to teach, ability to encourage people, teaching skills, and you need to be in PERSON, to hit the student in the head if its not hearing you, and the most important thing, you need to see the student i the process drawing so you can see what he is doing wrong, watching a finished piece wont help at all, because all errors are there and you didnt saw how they made it.

In modern era you actually dont need a teacher if you want to be in a solo run, do it, ive been doing that and im improving. Old days, people in art were hard to raise their level cause they didnt have access to information, today there is a high list of books and net sites around the world that anyone have access to it, dont be lazy.

Studying the same CAREER its not a guarentee that you will get the same result, stop being afraid of that, i studied graphic design, they didnt teach drawings like any other schools, just reular design, Jim Lee was a doctor, now check his bad ass drawings, Feng Zhu quit his art school and decided to do it by himself, check his lates works. A piece of paper hanging in your wall its not a WARRANTY of success, for art there is no formula, no steps to get there, its a DIY thing.

OH materials, oh god, i used to draw on opaline paper long time ago, and i changed that to regular paper, because someone asked me what was the type i used adn that he didnt knew were to buy it, he wanted me to take them by the hand and move them to an art store in another country, its IMPOSSIBLE, so i changed to regular paper so people can see that materials dont play a role, theya re just tools.

Magic scanner, i repeat i dont have a magical scanner, i can scan my drawings with any scanner i can find, the result will be the same, clean drawings, why? because my style its clean, people that have seen them in real life, they saw they were clean, no blue lines, no cheating, just hours of hard work to have them clean. So stop looking for a magical scanner, they dont exists.

The books, everyone ask me lists of books to read, whats my answer, any book, why? because anybook helps a lot, people want me to give them the list of books i got on my room, even the ones that are in spanish, thats doesnt matter, even if you memorize them you wont draw like me, each person works diferent, even if you were my clone, dressed the same, lived where i live watched what i like, and do the tons of stuff daily things i do, you wont draw like me.

Because each person its diferent, each brain has a diferent puzzle, each person sees thigns diferent, so the real question will be  instead of what toohbrush do i use, willbe what toothbrush works better for your own teeth?

So i CANT do your homework, art its a self discovery journey, people cant help you do the thigns you have to do for yourself, its a hard road, if it wasnt hard anyone can just draw the same and there will be any special thing about drawing, been good its all about about one thing.

Learn to SEE yourself, and question why?, why you grab the pencil that way? what will be the result if i grab it diferently? Am i drawing okay?, my back hurst probably i should draw in another position, am i seing the flower in front of me properly, need to double check my drawing, now i will use this pencil so i can compare my two drawings, etc.

And by the past of the years if you putted atention to you instead of others, you will be correting thign by thing, until you get the tools you feel more confortable, twisted minor things in your lines, its all about a slow perfection, there are no and i repeat, SHORTCUTS, MAGICAL ITEMS, FAIRYBLOOD INK, SPECIAL INFORMATION(that artist hide in a secret society), DOWNLOADABLE GOD BRUSHES(brushes that nodovy else will have in digital art), SPECIAL DRINKS( kids dont use drugs), or a MANUAL FOR IDEAS.

So to answer your answers i cant be your teacher, google, manual or marriage advisor, cause i suck in all, there are no better person for this than your own self.

Start trusting yourself, the choices you take, the bad ones the good ones, are knowledge, that will reflect in your daily life, and life will reflect in your art, dont be afraid to be yourself, in life we all make mistakes and waste ourlifes, i havent meet a person that didnt skipped this, its not late for you to learn art, dont let nobody to tell you  that you cant.

Dont be afraid to start your own discovery journey, that is what life its for.

I totally agree. BUT, you're underestimating a very important thing that you give to people: INSPIRATION AND HOPE. It's all about practice and passion, period. But there's something called "reality" that can be very cruel with our dreams. Reality can easily place us in a dark and unexpected path that goes in a total oposite direction to our dreams. And we can be forced to follow that path for a long time, but the passion is always there, and we feel miserable and lost.

But people like you are like a big light, a pharos in the distance that clear our minds and make us see our dream clearly. We arrive from work and check your journals cause we want to see our dream alive and kicking. So please keep making journals about our dream (ART!), and don't ever be afraid to "teach" us something if you feel like it. THANKS!

Aah the hard truth, how I love it. reading these makes me want to push myself further. I have been drawing since I was 13 there is a huge difference from then to now but I could also be a lot better at it. If only I had you to tell me to pull my finger out my ass earlier :P

A Photoshop disk spun on a unicorn horn for eight hours, cooled in a tub of wood sprite blood, and carried by a Wyvern Dragon though the Dark Nexus still works the same as one bought offline.
...

Darn.

Honesty is the best teacher.

Well, I would say, in any situation that I agree...

But this is strange, I don't agree completely.

You se, today I'm a drawing teacher, I give drawing lessons to my students. And you now, the method my group is creating is a very stimulating. Just like books. So, there ARE SHORTCUTS. Thos shortcuts are thngs like books, or good drawing classes.
Or, what YOU study, all the tecniques you've created in all you live, some people can share some of it, and by sharing they give other people shortcuts.
Even you have used these shortcuts. I've allways been a huge fan of yours, and always read all your journals (except the spolers ones XD), and you hav said you hav studied anatomy on books. So the knowlege of the book was a shortcut to knowing anatomy. Cuz otherwise you would waste MUCH more to gain that knowledge by opening people, studing muscles and observing people.

Of course I understand that what you meant is that people are SO lazy they can't even read a book, or look for a drawing lesson. And I agreed thar most of our ability comes from our dily practice.

=P

Yeah, this topic its about lazyness, you can tell a student, hey by the way cool that you are an art teacher, so anyway i was saying, that if a teacher tells you that a head look this way, the student will still need to do like 100 hundred drawings of the same pose, until their brain memorizes it, or sometimes you can tell a perspective tip to a student, but he wont be able to comprend it cause he is lazy, people see the goal, but they dont see were they are walking, it doesnt matter how much directions people can give you, if they dont start walkingon their know they will get to nowhere, thats the real topic, people are lazy that they dont want to learn to observe, they want people to point out directions for them, how many students you have told a mistake they are doing, and they do it and do it all over again, probably cause they know the goal, but they still dont know how to do it own their own right?

Yeah realy lots of them. We even say what the student is going do miss before he draws, and they still miss it =P

But in the end, just as you say, the ones hom doesn't pay atention don't go much far, and keep repeating the same things.

But for me the worst of them are the students that want to jump steps. Like, we have a method to teach, and for those guys hom want do draw manga style, we begin frm the non manga. Tey do anithing whth no care whatsoever, and ask to jump for the next step, thinking that only on the mangá lessons they will draw mangá. Sometimes i show my old drawing, the thing that I began drawing.

I show them that when I was young, I only tried to draw the super cool finalized stuff, and then one day I've began to train, look the world around, draw it, draw my hand in several many hundred thousands of positions (I learned by myself), and only after that train (that for me is never complete and I'm still doing it) I began to draw "cool finalized stuf". Some of them learn...Most of them does not =/

In the end I get a bit sad seeing people trowing of the chance I never had =/
