The artist Duty, be responsable

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 3, 2009, 11:21 AM
After watching the new movie of tranformers, that impressed me a lot, in a bad way but good, be cause it has open my eyes.

Optimus prime was a life seeker in the 80s, was a robot that liked justice and fight for life, this new version its just another random killer, with the flag of "good". What its the message for new generations, that killing its good for a cause?.

Dragon ball and one piece, i mean im a great fan of one piece, but every time i see luffy or goku, eating tons of food, more than a human will normaly eat, and the message its that its cool to eat alot like your heroes, whats the message for the new kids?

People used to eat to live, not to live to eat, what its the result, overweight in kids, and not only applies on anime or comics, even comercials, and stuff  like that.

I mean another example, ive always cry in movies, but people tell me if im watching a drama, and i say no, im watching an action movie. And people say the maovie was bad, or something? Why do you cry in an action movie?, and its because trees are always the victims, dont believe me, watch lost when they burn the wood house episode, they burned treess, just for 5 minutes entertainment, trees that had more age than you and mean. Action movies, the bullets always hits the trees, instead of the main character, they explode trees, cut trees, dicaprio goes to a virgin island just to film a crappy film about an island with weed, they destroy it, for an hour of entertaminet, same as titanic.

Or horror movies, were trees are always close the windows, and make trees to look like evil characters in the shadows, message trees are scarier.

Bees, what about bees, every single movie i see, its a lot of hate to bees, always kids destroying their nest with rocks and running away, its supposed to be funny?, everytime you see a bee in a movie it gets killed. Whats the message for the kids.

Probably a lot of people doesnt know that bees play a real important part in life of plants, with out them a lot of animals and plants will dissapear, and most probably men included. Un less we create robots that will do their job.

Farm boys, they are always the joke in movies, every movie i see people make fun of farm boys, in tons of ways, for me its probably the most important work in the world, they should be treated with respect, without food, people cant work.

And this is just a couple of examples.

Violence on games, each time getting more and more explicit, violence its not a key for fun, its just a lazy resource, people killing on gta, and now were i live because of the drug wars, the result tons of kids becoming killers, robbing people with age of 20 or less.

There can be great games,  like shadow of the colosus or the new one the last guardian
[link]

Or Zelda, games that fight to preserve life.

As artist, we have to entertain people, in a positive way, its harder and creative to do a character that doesnt kill like spiderman, or superman, than just a random guy with metal claws killing  alot of people, and making kill to look good.

Each time the manga, becomes more and more pedophilic, ive even saw a figure of a little girl literally been f****d by a dog. Each time animes are getting more and more fanservice, with little kids, and luv beetween brothers.

People are using what they call freedom of speech and democracy, as a cover to show real bad moral things.

Now, people seems to not see nature as real art, i mean, they destroy a tree made it tiny parts and assamble it again, place it on a museum and people can stay for hours saying woow what a great tree, when in nature trees are way cooler, destroying rocks to create human made rocks for buildings.

People eating and still havent finished what they have in the mouth and their other hand its even grabbing more food, like popcorn. People had stopped caring, like watching a movie in a teather, the lights turn on, eveybody goes without watching the seats, its real sad, look at them, tons of trash.

I started changing, i dont use plastic bags each time i go to a store, for an example, using the computer when i really use it, and turn it off, i have seen peopel that doesnt turn off the pc never, they are just to lazy to turn it on later, all lights in the house on, people trashing fine pieces of paper, cause it has a scracth and its not new anymore.

Pencils not entirely finished trashed down, people buying a celphone, then trashing it down to buy a new one, even if the cell its perfectly new. The tons of trash when ordering soemthing online.

People dont walk anymore to close stores, cause movies and media says that walking its for losers, dont believe me watch movies, and you will see walking kids and guys pass by in a car trashing them food or something, saying them losers.

And o my god EMPTY-V (what i call mtv), people stopped watching animal planet, to see the hills, the stupid show of paris hilton my very best fuck friend or something, i have a sister that watches all of that and tries to imitate it.

So what its in our hands, we can try to do a new message with out getting it worried, i mean im conscious that we consume, but we need to consume what we really need, dont eat more, dont waste electricity, papers, pencils. Some times old its good, not new its always great.

Right now the heat were i live its really impressive you feel like a sauna, past winter we didnt had a winter, never seen anything like this before, caus eits happening its not lies from the media, we need to change our entertaiment for something good.

And that made me think, i mean when you print somethign a tree died for that, i mean you have to respect the tree and do something good. Thats why im going to change the theme on my personal proyect im doing Hamadryad lament, probbly some people will notice that the scene were her head exploted was deleted.

Some people will complain, telling me im wrong, that the media right now its good, that its not going to a bad place, that its not affecting people, that the world its fine, economy never been better, the heat in my town, its just and hallucination created by all the snow in the air. That trees ar enot dissapearing, cause we are killing trees that had more than 200 years, and replacing them with new ones of one year old, that people eating whales, are not causing their extintion. That i have to enjoy the world before it runs out, unfortunatelly i have a niece now...

...And all i can think its what are we going to left for her.

So just learning that as entertainers, we have a lot of responsability in our shoulders, to be blind to not notice that we affect new children, that they start to admire us and say its cool.

I think we should need to think more about LIFE than death in our works, been good it wont necesarily make it a boring story.

I think its time to show people what it is really important and what it matters.

Some ideas are over reacted, and i cant be probably 100%. I mean i dont put myself on a pedestal judging. But i think we can do positive things instead of negative.

I mean probably thats the lamests examples i have ever told, to point out, that as a media we need to take care of what kids sees.

But what i can tell you its that cesorship its getting down and down, and probably programs or even books less smart.

I really believe that media can affect or give a huge impact to people, like when there was a flu here in mexico and tons of tourist panicked and didnt take a plane or something.

So i really think we should put attention in the works we do for future art, lest do this resposible.

Well said! You actually inspired me in several ways to stop being so lazy. (I.e. I usually only turn my pc off at night, but now I'm going to turn it off whenever I'm not using it, etc. . .)

wow your journals are always interesting... and I must say ... I've never tought about things like that

of course everybody heared about the global warming but many just ignore it...
I'm living on the countryside in germany and the nature is my home but you can see the global warming here too ... usually we don't have snow in winter(because we get the weather from the neatherlands ... a country which is around ~0m over the water)
anyway ... our teenagers mostly follow another trend ... today i was walking behind 3 "cool" guys from maybe 13 - 15 all of them smoking ...
i mean ... they weren't cool because they smoke that makes them "uncool" (??)
We've talked about the childhood nowadays in one religion lesson last year our result:
either they are "like" the other ones with their ideals and friends (??) or they are alone because they think different and right??
this society sucks - everyone say that but WHO wants to change this?

thanks for the mention

In our city, the government had cut around 100+ trees for the sake of road widening. Those trees could have been 100+ years alive...Now I want to see the mayor and make his mouth as wide as the road and fill it with all the flood that will come.

I see a lot of people agree completely. I do agree, only partially. I think that people should "choose" for themselves what the right thing to do is. Blaming the media for all of life's problems is a cop out. It's one's personal responsibility to do the right thing in one's own life. Goku being a glutton has no affect on kids being fat. It's up to the parent of a child to instill a moral foundation; teach right from wrong and raising children to the best of their abilities. In other words, a child will eat more than they need if you feed them more than they need (and possibly telling them they have to eat it all). Or, if you feed them unhealthy meals and snacks and LET them watch tv or play video games instead of exercising or playing, it becomes habit; i.e. an addiction. The same is true when deciding to LET your child watch violent programs or play violent games, however I personally believe that its okay to do so (after a certain age or development of comprehension) IF you explain the fantasy/make-believe of the "questionable material". After all, you can't shield anyone for their whole lives from the reality of life; nor can they learn what's unacceptable if we don't teach them why.
I believe in freedom of choice, freedom of speech and owning personal responsibility; only then can one be truly free. And therefor, I respect your point of view even if I don't entirely agree.
Yes, in a perfect world there would be no immorality, no violence, no death, no profanity (although, profanity is a ridiculous concept; shielding people from slang or alternate vocabulary choices and deeming those words as immoral or damaging. You can say butt, but you can't say ass, you can say jesus christ if you're praying, but you can't say it if you're angry), etc. In a perfect world, a story would have no conflict while maintaining interest. Unfortunately, a story that a man lived once isn't as interesting as say... the man was murdered. But with moral outrage comes special interest laws against certain personal liberties, victimless crimes, one might say.
Anyway, my comment is long enough but I thought I would show you some insight of why some may disagree with you.

I partly agree with your thoughts. I do believe humans are very arrogant and tend to think they're superior to everything else, and so make trees go to waste for their own pleasure, but i disagree with the killing being just for fun, well, it's a part of our nature, the survival instinct, and the images help to put it under control, the problem is that generally education does not give us the understanding and mental maturity to let it stay on the picture, and so we create littles Hydes, without jekills i presume lol.And by pedophilia i believe sometimes its impact is due to diferences in the reception of cultures. I do not believe there are right or wrong things, i guess you can do just whatever you want, but by doing something that harm the other it is just logical that you may expect retaliation, and it would be just fait to come... sorry about anything that is har to grasp the concept. thank you for you time reading this ;)

i am amazed about how much you think and that you really care
and give your knowledge you thought about to others

i mean, i try to live in harmony too, like not kill any animal if fly or anything or do random damage to trees and plants~

but there were some points in your statement i didnt think of yet...
i am not pretty good in linking things thats might influence each other headwhise XD

thank you! =)

I don't know if you'll read my comment or not, but I have to say (or in this case type) that your journal is really insightful. I agree on many points you hit, but on some I sort of sway to a different side. I completely agree with your tree argument. Why would we want to destroy something that gives us life? We, the people as human beings, are killing the very things that give us life! Do we even know it? I'm not sure. I've often thought about the trees lately. I just got back from a campus tour and camps and some of them had the most beautiful trees and forests I have ever seen. They were gorgeous. I love trees, I used to climb them all the time and sit in their branches watching the clouds go by. I can't do that now because everyone tore down the trees where I live. I think a bit of my childhood left with them. So when I watch a tree being torn down, trimmed, or god forsake- blown up a bit of my soul goes with it. This new TV show on Cartoon network, what's it called? Build and destroy? It most POINTLESS mind numbing TV show I have ever seen. They blow things up- then they build things out of the remains then blow it up again. I saw a perfectly find car and boat be blown to bits with dynamite... I won't lie- the first thing I thought was, "Those were perfectly find vehicles. If they were really in bad shape recycle them..." Then I thought, "Those explosives have to be bad for the environment. I can't believe they put this crap on CN of all things!" I've completely stopped watching television because of the useless crap they put on now. Not to mention the influence it has on artists. I've made things that are exactly the same as "so and so" and not even know it. And oh man, MTV... I HATE MTV with a passion. I've seen what it does to people, and it's certainly unappealing, and a zombie puppet hypnotist thing feasting on the minds of humanity. Also I find it quite fishy they put Adult Swim on the same channel as Cartoon Network. Our cartoons have hit the dirt. I'm very disappointed in the cartoons they put out now and days. TV- I don't want it. Not even the news. The News puts nothing but the daft and dreary in the limelight. Almost like they're saying "There's no hope. Give up now." I hate the news. I don't need to know the weather. I can see it just fine. And you're right again. I think there should be more focus on educational television rather than all these adds directing us to mind melting crap. Every channel it's "GO watch MTV's NEXT" or "Simpsons- Nonight at 9:00 PM. EST on FOX!" I never see advertisements for Animal Planet...

Now, on the other hand, I do blame the people for lowing their guard to the media. I put some of the blame on the families and parents of these children for allowing them to watch this rubbish. I think... families should be careful what they watch- and at the same time have strong morals. I grew up with shows like Card Captor Sakura, .Hack//SIGN, Ed Edd and Eddy, etc- and my mom was careful what I saw and at the same time taught me right from wrong. And thanks to that- I could have a good understanding what was okay and not okay; so since I had a great mom, and good morals- I was able to watch more intense entertainment and just be like, "Okay. Interesting story line." And just see it as entertainment and nothing more. I want to be an animator- and I think about this stuff a lot. The problem (where I live anyway) is that families don't care about their children. I often see parents lounging in their house doing drugs in FRONT of their children, and just wasting away letting their child naked minded in the world. Thinking drugs are "okay"... thinking "Drinking" is cool. The only reason why they think that is because these children I've seen grew up with parents that are doing these things in front of them and giving the signal that "It's not bad." There are children in my school that are high all the time. They do dip, weed, drink- everything... Oh... and who can forget sex... Yeah. These children do it all... and it's all because no one was there to teach them right from wrong, so they gather their morals from popular television. But I'm not putting the WHOLE blame on the guardians. Also the media for having such an unbalanced programming. I think people have lost the will to decide for themselves and the media is taking over. I really dislike the media. It's strange... I want to work for the very thing I hate... Like: Andy Warhol loved empty space, yet he was an artist and instead took up space. It's funny how us as artists and art lovers sort of contradict ourselves in a way. Well, in my opinion anyway.

Which leads me to my final comment on your journal:
The purpose of artist- You are exactly right. We do have a responsibility- A HUGE ONE! And we should put more focus into what we're saying. Being more positive on that note I can sway. As much as I agree that positive art can be good for the people, but I would also include art that shows the wrong and bad in life. I don't want to completely blindside people into thinking everything is hunky-dory with beautiful happy art, but I think it's also good to have dark artists that show the evils in the world- but be careful what to show. We should all be careful what we show. (unless it's like... pop-art when in reality the image really doesn't have a meaning behind it) Being positive isn't enough, we must also know what to avoid or everything is "positive". Take the Gorillaz Demon Day's album for example. I love that album. They call it dark pop. Zombie pop. Which I can see. The music in Demon Days is kinda of haunting in a way. Dark. Like O Green World. It's haunting- but when you pay attention to the lyrics and really read into it the real message is to always keep a bit of greenery in your heart. And the whole album is a message- and it ends with a beautiful gospel music type song:

"When lies become reality
You numb yourself with drugs and TV
Pick yourself up it's a brand new day
So turn yourself round
Don't burn yourself, turn yourself
Turn yourself around into the sun!"

My favorite part of the whole thing is hearing that stanza. I find it very true- and each time I hear it I feel refreshed and renewed. For a very creepy album there's light within each track. I find it to be a perfect example of balance of showing the good and bad in the world. And not saying we should copy them and do just that- but to take into consideration that we show good with the bad and educate humanity of the world.

This was an extremely long comment, and I'm sorry- just thought I'd share my views on the subject at hand. Your journal was a very good read, and very insightful.
