Windows 8 and wacom

Fri Oct 26, 2012, 4:23 PM
Saw today that you can install windows 8, so got curious, noticed how cheap was for the upgrade, 40 dollars i said okay, what can i lose, then an exe installs and checks everything, he ask me how topay, and what settings i should keep from my old windows 7, i said okay.

2 gigs its the file of this windows, took me around 24 minutes to download it, then wait for other 2 hours to install it.

Then it was on, started sooooo fast that my windows 7 felt really old, my  jaw was wide open to notice all the new features, and im not even using a touch pc, im in love of the apps.

Just  to mention an example, i got skype(19 megs size) then i noticed the skype app(736kb) sooo small and soooo complete.

They got rid of ugly interfaceeee, for the first time in all windows, doesnt feel like a bastard son from windows 95.

Took me a while to figure out were are all the features, like control panel and stuff, the more i learn about windows  8 the more i love it.

Finally dual monitor software, i mean i can have a different wall paper on each monitor, have the windows bar on each monitor, have extra options on each corner of each screen, this is like a dream.

When i raise volume a mini player appears, so you can even change the song without opening a new program.

Finally i can read emails in windows, outlook express in past versions were horrible, it even let me put many emails in one account, skype and messenger joined together.

Easy to seach stuff online, installed a wikipedia app, you can pin everything in metro and now need to have horrible icons on wallpaper.

For good sake i love internet explorer more than firefox because of the minimalistic that it issss.

Ive never in my life expect to love internet explorerrrrrr.

Note: my harware its brand new so probably if you have old stuff can get compatibility problems so wait for the first service pack.

So far so good my tablet wacom works, same painter 12 and photoshop, same norton antivirus.

Except tune up utilities, i need to upgrade.

I was a hater of windows 8, spammed all youtube videos saying crap, and then comes out and slaps my face. I feel so ashamed now.

Well done Gates, well done.

Have you had any problems with brush lag in PhotoShop since updating?

a bit, like if you do super fast strokes like for texturing, it delays a bit, but for regular coloring works fine

It's weird, I never had any problems with brush lag AT ALL before I installed Windows 8 Pro (I had theretofore been using Windows 8 Release Preview). I thought it might have just been that I hadn't gotten all the drivers installed properly but after updating everything I can think of the brush lag has diminished but is still obvious.

I don't really do a lot of heavy anything. Just sketching. It's just really annoying to have gone from 0 lag to any lag.... Still trying to figure out how to fix it.

wacom will release a new driver soon, tons of people complaining of same thing, i think the dynamics thing from windows its causing this, because it cant be disabled in windows 8 like in 7

My main issue about windows 8 is the "dontcallitmetro" interface, its not that I don't like change, I like change, but i like my screen real estate more. My main issue that I have with windows 8 is that everything takes up so much more space! The "dontcallitmetro" interface means that even if you've only got a few programs installed, you still have to scroll.

They've also made the ribbon interface on explorer windows?!? What is with that! It takes up a serious amount of space! I hated he Ribbon bar on Office 2007 and I really don't want it on all of my explorer windows, I know that you can customize it to make it smaller but there was nothing wrong with the old one, If you hide the ribbon interface then you have none of the options, where as with the old one you had most of the options taking up less than half of the space of the ribbon.

Personally i would like windows 8, if and only if, it looked like window 7. I like the 'hot corners' (if they are like the mac's corner function things) and i'm sure that there are a few changes that i like.

The "dontcallitmetro" interface will work well on a touch-screen tablet like device, but as a desktop/laptop device, what i really want is a start menu that lists my programs with out space wasting images (settings set to small icons [or turned off], font as small as i can get it and still read it, no scroll).

Also, one thing people always mention with Windows 8 is the program search, well its a no for me, as i ether don't know what the program is called that i'm looking for, don't know what i'm looking for, or know exactly where the mouse needs to be for the program i want, and pictures and words are not even needed.

Obviously this is just what I think of it, you seam to like it so thats fine.

What were the problems with Wacom/Windows 7? I've just got a Bamboo and I haven't seen any, though I haven't used it too much since I got it.

That's interesting. Most people seem to dislike Win8 so far, at least from what I've read. I guess I'd have to play around with it myself. Apps on my Nexus 7 tablet compared to programs, though, tend to be incomplete with some shortcomings.

The price is working only until January, or at least so I heard on the radio. I don't know if you have to buy the full license then...? O.o

The cheap licence is an upgrade OS, basically replaces windows XP/Vista/7 with 8 its like getting a discount for being loyal...

Most people just love to hate 8 for no reason, I bet most of them didn't even tried it out once (me neither). This was just the same thing going on with 7 when it was released. Hardcore XP fans hated it for the new features and now "It's the best!". Lol...

Well, sadly, I have to join the hating wagon. I've just tried it for an hour and it just feels so wrong in every aspect other than the speed, it's fast... but unusable. Multitasking is a pain with it and I just hate to have anything in fullscreen other than games. It's whole concept is just awful to use, looks good but it's rotten in the inside :\ .

Gabe Newell has been on record saying that Win8 is a "catastrophe" and is looking to get Steam to work properly on Linux.

So uh, that should tell you the future of gaming on Windows 8.

Wow, nice going there, you make a good advertisement for Win8 - I'm glad you like it and are so enthusiastic about it. :) I'm sure more people will consider the new OS after reading your journal, I'm certainly curious now. :) I mean, to start liking Internet Explorer, that's.. wow. Microsoft must have made something really great.

I was concerned that it was just another means of getting people to have to shell out more money; especially seeing as how the system I built 4 years ago started with windows7 Beta. I figured new systems are always coming way too soon. My 4 year old system still rates a 7.3 on the scale (I built it to play Crysis the original) and it still is going strong...I still am going to upgrade it now and then. Glad to hear Windows 8 is a sound investment!

The thing I wait for is the day that Windows OS doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. My OS Mac update was 20 dollars and if you wanted it from scratch it's like...100 maybe less. I love windows as much as I love apple but...for the system that everyone uses it really cost too much :/

I'm on the opposite platform. I find the new interface horribly inefficient and that huge improvements need to be made for navigation, including when you have allot of programs. The process of shutting down the unit is not intuitive, and getting the the control panel is quicker done by entering commands than navigation. The dual bar system is inefficient as well, with a pop up bar that doesn't know when it should come out or not. I don't need my PC to be like my tablets or phones either. I also want it where I don't have to use the windows key to get out of the new programs. I want a way to close the picture, movie, music programs without alt f4 or windows keying out. I find it easier to just ctrl alt del to shut the computer down than navigate to settings and clicking on shut down. I've already repeated myself enough, I think people understand that I despise the new windows.

This is good to know, especially since I recently read an article in a PC magazine about how Windows 8 is expected to be a big flop.

I've also been considering bootcamping my Mac with Windows, so it's good to hear that 8 isn't a bust.

All of my friends on Facebook seem to hate windows 8 (mostly computer science students).
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm inclined to agree with them, since I'm a software developer.

Windows 7 does what I need it to, and I'm familiar with it.
Adjusting to a radically different interface doesn't seem like a worthwhile time investment for me.
